Obituary

Funeral services for William J. Smith, 83, of Groveton will be held at 11:00 a.m., Friday, January 22nd, in the Cartwright Memorial Chapel of Groveton Funeral Home with Brother Lonnie Vallance officiating. Burial will follow in Glenwood Cemetery. The family will receive visitors Thursday, January 21st, from 6:00 p.m until 8:00 p.m. at Groveton Funeral Home.

Mr. Smith was born on September 11, 1932 in Navasota, Texas to Birt and Pearl (Morgan) Smith and passed away January 18, 2016 at his home in Groveton, Texas. William was an avid hunter and fisherman. He loved to be outdoors and working with wood to create his own masterpieces from his craftsmanship. He also enjoyed reading western novels and spending time with his grandchildren and great grandchildren. In his later years he enjoyed sharing his memories of when he served in the United States Navy. He is preceded in death by his parents, Birt and Pearl Smith; a son, William J. Smith, Jr.; a step-daughter, Sheryl Jarvis; son-in-law, Randle Clark Key and six sisters.

Mr. Smith is survived by his loving wife, Ethel Smith of Groveton; his children: daughter, Dede Coleman and husband, Barry Coleman of Ohio, daughter, Patience Marie Key of Spring and boyfriend, Andy Lambert, son, Keith William Jarvis and wife Trisha Jarvis of Tomball, daughter, Deborah Horne and husband Billy Horne of San Augustine, son, David Smith and wife Stephanie Smith of Groveton, daughter, Danette Allen and husband Chris Allen of Groveton, and son, Tom Smith and wife, Tracey Smith of San Augustine; numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren; two sisters, Laura Ash and Cora Smith, both of Houston; and a host of nieces, nephews and other relatives and friends.
