Meta C. Witt, 92, of Apple Springs went to be with her Lord and Savior on February 3, 2015 after a courageous fight from cancer. The family will receive visitors from 12:30 p.m. until service time at 2:00 p.m. on Friday, February 6, 2015 at Groveton Funeral Home with Pastor Frank Starr officiating. Burial will follow in Mt. Zion Cemetery and she will be escorted to her final resting place by her pallbearers, Dwight Pyle, Malrey Pyle, Marcus English, Kevin Smith, Mike Hollis and Brad Busler.

Meta was born in Bruchwalde, East Prussia, Germany (now Poland). She was one of nine children born to Gustav and Mina Sawitza. Gustav was a successful forester. The Lutheran church was a very important part of their family life. Mina insured that the children attended confirmation classes and attended each week, even when Gustav wanted to work in the forest.

Meta attended college in Sensburg, receiving an associate's degree in accounting and worked as an accountant until 1944. She was also an accomplished horsewoman. Her mother, Mina died New Year's Eve of 1944. Immediately after her burial on January 5, 1945 Meta fled Germany with her younger sister, Katie as the Russian Army approached their family home. This home eventually became the Russian headquarters as it was the largest in that area.

She and Katie lived as refugees in Europe for two years. Meta came to the United
States in 1950 and worked as an accountant. She lived in San Antonio, Texas where she met and married Wesley H. Witt in 1955. During these years Meta became the business manager at Superior Pontiac. Later Wesley retired and he and Meta moved to what is now the Witt family farm in Apple Springs. Meta worked for Robin and Roger Mercer with Mercer Nissan as the office manager and helped them to grow their business. She later retired and afterwards, volunteered at Memorial Hospital. She then became an avid bridge player within the community. When the Berlin Wall was removed, she returned to Germany and saw her family home which is still standing and houses several families to this day.

She is preceded in death by her parents, Gustav and Mina Sawitza; her husband, Wesley H. Witt; and numerous siblings. Meta leaves to cherish her memory her beloved grandson, Terry Witt; step-daughter, Barbara Smith and husband, James Smith; numerous grandchildren and great grandchildren; nephew, James Due and wife, Deborah Due and a host of nieces and nephews, including great-nieces, Donna Brusler and husband, Brad Busler, Leigh Williams and husband, Michael Stephens; special friend, Patsy Rivers and numerous other relatives and cherished friends who also shared her love of playing bridge, also survive.

The family would like to request that memorials be made to First Lutheran Church, Lufkin, Texas in Meta Witt's honor.
