Obituary

Mary Alice Pittman, age 102, of Groveton, completed her earthly journey and went to be with her Lord and Savior on February 4, 2014 in Groveton, Texas. Visitation will begin at 8:30 AM until service time at 10:00 AM on Saturday, February 15, 2014 in the Cartwright Memorial Chapel of the Groveton Funeral Home with Bro. C.J. McFarland and Bro. James Hurst officiating. Interment will follow in Pennington Cemetery.

Mary was born on September 3, 1911 to her parents, Jessie Fern Davis and Ella Morris (Coma) Davis in Pennington, Texas. In her early childhood years, she attended the local school in the Trinity County Community. Mary's mother encouraged her to do all that she could do to make heaven her home someday. She later married Luther Robert Pittman, the love of her life until his untimely death. Luther was a Church of Christ Minister and Mrs. Mary was First Lady at the Church of Christ Church in Groveton, Texas. She was an excellent homemaker. Two years ago, the Centenarian Club awarded Mary with a certificate for living 100 years. Her name was also submitted to the President's list for the oldest Americans in the U.S.A. for living 102 years.

She is preceded in death by her parents, Jessie and Ella Davis; husband, Luther Pittman; daughter, Rosceil King Evans; step daughters, Vera, Lacy and Maronni; son, Bennie R. Simmons-Pittman; sisters, Ludie Simmons, Robbie Hawthorne Mitchell and Mary Etta Starghill; brothers, R.D. Davis and Columbus Morris; granddaughter, Rosalind Serges Page; nieces, Gladys Davis and Terry Lynn Harris, of Houston, Texas; in laws, Nancy Davis, Moore Evans, Herman Starghill and Ed Hawthorne; nephews, James Olan Harris, Sr., Harold M. Phipps, Sr., and A.B. Page, of Houston, Texas. She leaves behind her step daughter, Jewell, of Houston, Texas; granddaughter, Mary Ruth Bell; great grandson, Anthony B. Page and wife, Ashley, of Houston, Texas; great great-grandchildren, Sade' J. Page, Akili B. Page and Brenae R. Page, of Houston, Texas; niece, Annette Hawthorne Phipps; nephew, Mr. Carl Strong and Jesse; great nieces, Evelyn Netter, LaShannon N. Harris, Amanda Phipps and families; great nephews, James Olan Harris, Jr., Chris Calvin, Mike and Paul Davis and Harold M. Phipps, Jr. A host of other relatives and friends, also survive.

The family would like to give a special thank you to Jackie, Alice Young, Gracy Davis, L.B. Joseph, Thelma and the staff of all health care providers in the East Texas Region and the Groveton Community.
