Leonard Divine (L.D.) Lowery, Jr. of Groveton, was born in Carlisle, Texas on September 23, 1928 during a time now considered the greatest generation. He passed away on August 27, 2018 in Groveton at the age of 89. L.D. graduated from Groveton High School in 1946 and attended Texas A&M University for a year. In 1996 he received a Humanitarian Award and was inducted into the Groveton Ex-Students Hall of Fame. After 40 year's service, L.D. retired from Brown & Root, Inc. but not from a life of service. He returned to the Carlisle Community and continued working with numerous charities, his church and fellow neighbors. His hobbies revolved around his love of the outdoors, such as gardening, hunting, fishing, and golf. L.D. Is survived by his wife, Irene; son, Leonard (Leo) D. Lowery, III, Cypress, Tx; daughter and son-in-law Elizabeth (Liz) and Brian Steege, Cronulla, Australia; sister, Polly Simmons; sisters-in-law Bernita (Butch) Lowery and Shirley Lowery Tingley; brother-in-law Gaston R Millstid; grandchildren, Molly Adams, Meredith McCollum, Matthew and Alex Steege; stepdaughters and sons-in-law, Denise & Winston Whiddon, Beckville, Tx; and Dolores & Scott Nevins, Elysian Fields, Tx; 4 step grandchildren; and 9 step great grandchildren. Also survived by a host of nieces, nephews and other relatives. He is proceeded in death by his parents, Leonard D. Lowery, Sr. and Pearl Blalock Lowery; siblings, Juanita Lewis, Naomi Knight, Royal and Doyal Lowery and wife, Vera Millstid Lowery. Memorial Services will be held Saturday, September 8, 2018 at Groveton Funeral Home. Visitation will begin at 10:00 a.m. with the service to follow.
