Obituary

Jimmie Mark Hamby, 90, of Groveton, Texas, passed away peacefully on February 16, 2026, in Lufkin, Texas, after a courageous battle with illness. He was born February 7, 1936, in Houston, Texas, to Wencel and Doris Lucas Hamby.

On November 7, 1957, Jimmie married the love of his life and best friend, Mattie Beth Berry-Hinkle, in Houston, Texas. He proudly served his country in the U.S. Army for two years of active duty, followed by four years in the Army Reserves. After his military service, he worked as a mechanical engineer and was admired for his intelligence, work ethic, and integrity.

Following retirement, Jimmie enjoyed golf, gardening, traveling with Mattie Beth, attending Bible studies, and reading about military history. A graduate of Austin High School and the University of Houston, he was also a past member of the Masonic Lodge in Houston. In recent years, Jimmie cherished his time spent in the quiet country around Groveton, surrounded by family and faith.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Wencel and Doris Hamby, and brother, Paul Hamby.

Left to cherish his memory are his devoted wife, Mattie Beth Hamby of Groveton; daughters, Susan Bucher and husband, Curtis, of Houston, and Karen Wagner and husband, James "Jim," of Marble Falls; grandchildren, Sarah Corliss and husband, Dewayne; Zachary LeLeux and wife, Tara; and Stephanie DeRosario and husband, Noell; and great-grandchildren, Owen, Peyton, Kennedy, and Gwen. He is also survived by numerous relatives and friends who will miss him greatly.

Pallbearers: Dewayne Corliss, Zachary LeLeux, Curtis Bucher, Jim Wagner, Noell DelRosario, and Seth Bucher.
Honorary Pallbearers: Tom Holcombe, Owen Gene Corliss.

The family will receive friends at 12:00 p.m. Friday, February 20, 2026, at Calvary Baptist Church in Nogalus Prairie, Texas. Funeral services will begin at 1:00 p.m. with Bro. James Whittlesey officiating. Interment will follow at Calvary Cemetery.

Jimmie will always be remembered for his strong faith, kind heart, and his love for his family, church, and country.
