Henry Edward Thornton, 89, of Trinity, Texas, passed away peacefully on July 16, 2026, in Trinity. He was born June 9, 1937, at his family's home in Chita, Texas, to Clinton Osman Thornton and Eva Mae Parker Thornton. The youngest of ten children, Henry was born and raised in the Chita community. He began school in Chita in a one room school house, before the school house was closed. All the students were moved to Groveton, where he graduated from Groveton High School.

On October 28, 1960, Henry married the love of his life, Virginia "Ginger" Thornton, at the Trinity home of the Baptist minister, Brother Reedy. Together, Henry and Ginger built a life rooted in faith, family, hard work, and the land they loved in the Chita community.
Henry was a true cowboy and rancher. He loved raising cattle and was happiest working from horseback, especially with his two favorite horses, Ned and Lady B. Ranching was more than an occupation to Henry - it was his way of life. T-Ranch was started by his dad, C.O. Thornton and as a young man Henry along with his brother Jimmy, chose to make that their occupation and continued the ranch for the rest of their lives. He also had a great passion for ranch rodeo. Henry and his team were talented competitors, winning the Texas State Championship three consecutive years. They also won national honors in Oklahoma City and at the Houston Livestock Show.
As proud as Henry was of his ranching and rodeo accomplishments, his greatest joy was his family. He loved watching his sons compete in sporting events as they grew up, and that joy continued as he cheered for his grandchildren and great-grandchildren in their many activities. Whether he was sitting in the stands, standing along a fence, or sharing a story at home, Henry was proudest when surrounded by those he loved.
Henry was a lifetime member of Sebastopol Congregational Methodist Church, where his faith remained an important part of his life. He faithfully served his community as a board member of the Chita Cemetery Association and was a longtime member of the Texas and Southwestern Cattle Raisers Association. Whenever time allowed, he also participated with the Groveton Booster Club, supporting local youth and their activities. Henry will be remembered as a devoted husband, loving father and grandfather, loyal friend, skilled horseman, and true Texas rancher. His was a life shaped by faith, family, cattle, good horses, hard work, and an enduring love for the Chita community. His legacy will live on in the family he cherished, the land he tended, and the many lives he touched.

Henry was preceded in death by his parents, Clinton Osman Thornton and Eva Mae Parker Thornton; five sisters, Georgia Armstrong, Jean Sowell, Eula Mae Jordan, Grace Kantz, and Vivian Seale; and three brothers, Haron Thornton, R.C. Thornton, and Clinton Osman Thornton Jr..

He is also survived by his loving wife, Virginia "Ginger" Thornton; four sons, Lamar Thornton and wife Penny Jo, Glenn Ray Thornton and wife Sandi, Scott Thornton and wife Penny, and Matthew Thornton and wife Kim; grandchildren, Chance Thornton and wife Taryn, Clint Thornton, Nick Thornton and wife Brittney, Glenn Thornton Jr. and wife Jaycie, Carson Avery, Brody Thornton, Abbey Thornton, Brady Thornton, Isabella Thornton, and Chloe Thornton; great-grandchildren, Lakyn Thornton, Landyn Thornton, Layni Thornton, Presley Thornton, and Charley Mae Thornton. Henry is also survived by his brother, Jimmy S. Thornton, who is the last remaining of the 10 siblings, a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives, and dear friends.

The family will receive visitors Friday, July 24, 2026, beginning at 5PM until 7PM at Groveton Funeral Home. Funeral services for Mr. Henry Thornton will begin on Saturday, July 25, 2026, beginning at 11:00 AM at Groveton Funeral Home with Bro. Kevin Smith, who is officiating and Larry Fortenberry assisting.  Burial will follow in Chita Cemetery.
