A community leader, respected and greatly loved by all who knew him, Elmer Roy Wright of Nogalus Prairie passed from this life in the first hour of December 14, 2011, waking to a beautiful morning in Heaven to spend eternity with the Lord. He was born on January 28, 1934 to Albert and Leona Wright, and he graduated from Groveton High School in 1951. He was a United States Army volunteer, enlisting in 1954 and serving his country at Ft. Bliss in El Paso, and in February of 1956, Roy soon enrolled in college in Huntsville and graduated from Sam Houston State University in 1959. Roy became a city letter carrier for the Lufkin Post Office in 1963, and he retired in September 1991.

Roy married Betty Sue King on July 16, 1959, and she survives him, along with their children: Revette and son-in-law Don Hamilton of Groveton, Lynette Wright of Nogalus, and Angela Alsbrooks of Nogalus. His family was his treasure, and he was a Godly example who lived his life in service to the Lord. He and Betty were blessed with four grandchildren; Whitney Hamilton of Ft. Worth, Clint Hamilton of Groveton, Nathan Alsbrooks of College Station and Mason Alsbrooks of Nogalus. In addition, Roy leaves three sisters, Lucille Tucker of Houston, Madeline Barker of Porter, and Lois and brother-in-law Val Bilski of Groveton. He is also survived by his sister-in-law and brother-in-law, Jolene and Ronnie Alsbrooks of Hudson. Preceding him in death were his sisters Zoie Pannel and Wilma Savoie Roberts, his brothers Leon and Doyle Wright, and his brother-in-law, Preston (Bubba) King.

Spending time with his family was always Roy's priority, and he never missed and opportunity to encourage his children and grandchildren with his presence at school and church functions. He was a deacon at Calvary Baptist in Nogalus, and he joyfully served as song leader as well. He loved preparing refreshments for the youth on Wednesday evening. He also joyfully provided and prepared breakfast for Children's Church each Sunday morning. He took pleasure in keeping not only his own yard manicured, but that of the church, too. He allowed Christ to live His Life through him in every way, and family and friends too numerous to mention can be comforted by the words of Psm. 116:15..."Precious in the sight of the Lord is the death of His Saints." Roy is safely home with the Lord.

Roy has served on the board of directors of Calvary Cemetery Association and worked hard as a volunteer to make improvements there. He was also a founding director of the Nogalus Water System, and at the time of his death, Roy was Vice-President of Wright Choice Home Health of Nogalus and Huntsville.

Services will be held Friday, December 16, 2011 at 11:00 A.M. at the Calvary Baptist Church with Bro. James Whittlesey and Nathan Alsbrooks officiating. Interment will follow in the Calvary Cemetery. Visitation will be held from 6:00 P.M - 8:00 P.M. Thursday, December 15, 2011 at the Calvary Baptist Church in Nogalus. Memorials may be made to the Calvary Baptist Church and Calvary Cemetery Association.
