Dorothea Marlene Powell Ables, 87, completed her journey on Earth, Sunday, May 24,2020. She was born December 23,1932 in Groveton, Texas. Dorothea is survived by Robert Ables, her loving husband of 71 Years, and her three sons: Robert Gary Ables and wife Janet, Mark Daniel Ables and wife Mary, and James Aaron Ables and wife Lana. She is also survived by five grandchildren: Julie Nicole Ables Waller and husband Matt, Chase Alan Ables and wife Stephanie, Alyssa Lynn Ables Stringer and husband Robert, Eric Daniel Ables, and Andrea Elizabeth Ables. She has one great grandson, Levi Thomas Waller, who was the apple of her eye. Dorothea was preceded
in death by her parents, Cleaver and Esther Powell, her sisters Clarice Powell Willis, and Mavis Powell Aucoin, and her brother, Earl C. "TOM" Powell.

God was always first in Dorothea's life. Growing up in Groveton, she attended Oaklawn Baptist Church where her maternal grandparents were charter members. She and Robert were married at Oaklawn Baptist Church on May 25,1949. Robert and Dorothea lived and raised their children in Houston, Texas. They were members of Glendale Baptist Church and she made sure her sons attended regularly. In 1997, Dorothea and her husband moved back to Groveton, where they built a new house. Dorothea took great pride in decorating this house and making it feel like a home to those of us who gathered there often. After their move, they became active members at The First Baptist Church of Groveton, where she enjoyed all the adult and children's activities. She also had a beautiful voice and enjoyed singing hymns. Even when her memory began to fail, she was able to remember the words and tunes of her favorite songs.

Aside from church, she loved her friends and looked forward to attending and/or hosting their weekly game nights. She was active in the senior citizen group and especially loved the Saturday nights when they gathered to listen to music. Her biggest passion became serving on the board of the Groveton Nursing Home and she volunteered there daily. She tried to her utmost to brighten the lives of all those who called it home. Her smile would always light up a room and her affable personality was admired by everyone she encountered.

Above all, she loved her family. Her husband, sons, daughter in laws, and grandchildren, and great grandson adored her. We all loved visiting her for holidays and other special occasions in the home that she made for us. As her family, we were incredibly happy to be able to keep her for as long as we did in this cherished home that held so many memories for us. We appreciate all her friends, church family, and caretakers, that helped make her last few years so pleasant. Also, a special thanks to the staff and caretakers of Trinity Rehabilitation and Hospice in the Pines.

Visitation will be held beginning at 10:00 a.m. on Friday, May 29, 2020 in the Cartwright Memorial Chapel of Groveton Funeral Home in Groveton, TX.  Funeral services will begin at 11:00 a. m. with Bro. Lewis Jones officiating and burial will follow in Glenwood Cemetery in Groveton, TX.

Pallbearers:  Billy Selman, Chase Ables, Eric Ables, Matthew Thomas Waller, Danny Schellhase, and Robert Stringer.
