Donna Sue Ellis was born on February 16, 1950, in Houston, Texas, to Burness Davis and Marlene Young Davis, and passed away peacefully on October 23, 2025, at her residence in Groveton, Texas, at the age of 75 years.
Donna loved playing the piano and had a creative spirit that shined through in everything she did. She enjoyed cross-stitching, painting, and working crossword puzzles, and she was especially talented with floral design. She even owned and operated her own floral shop at one time. In her downtime, Donna enjoyed sitting outdoors on her porch, observing the beauty of Mother Nature.
She was a graduate of Sam Houston High School and later took several college courses. Donna was a long-time and devoted member of the First Baptist Church of Groveton. She also faithfully served her community for many years as a member of the Groveton City Council. Professionally, she worked as a social worker for Texas Human Health Services, from which she eventually retired after many years of dedicated service.
Donna was preceded in death by her parents, Burness and Marlene Davis; her sister, Sharon Carriker; her niece, Cheryl Bricker; great-niece, Ashley; brothers-in-law, Gene Ellis, John Ellis, and Ernest Ellis, Jr. (known as "Pee Wee"); sister-in-law, Faye Mitchem; and numerous aunts and uncles.
She is survived by her loving husband of 40 years, George Ellis of Groveton, Texas; sisters, Carrie Reynolds and Nita Barlow; sisters-in- law: Glenda Ellis, Jan Ellis, Frances Thornton, Polly Luce and husband, David Luce; nieces, Christy and Courtney Burkhart; nephew, Brett Reynolds and wife, Anessa; niece, Kelly Huffhines; great-niece, Kyrsten Oliver; great-nephew, Austin Bricker, and Sydney Cooper; niece, Mandi and Ronald Hodge; niece, Sandi Satterwhite and husband, Tim Upshaw; nephew, Trey Ellis and wife, Tiaya Ellis; niece, Pam McMahon and husband, Troy McMahon; niece, Jennifer Larsen; niece, Kathy Thomas and husband, Michael Thomas; niece, Jessica Ellis; niece, Kelly Marsh and husband, Glenn Marsh; nephew, Chris Mitchem and wife, Amy Mitchem; nieces and nephews: Rachel Smith, Kim Williams, Richard Thornton, Josh Thornton, Mark Luce and wife, Kelly, Keith Luce and wife, Rhonda, and Woody Luce and wife, Sherry Luce; along with a host of great-nieces, great-nephews, and other relatives and friends who will cherish her memory.
Funeral Services for Donna Sue Ellis will be held Monday, October 27, 2025, at 11:00 a.m. in the Cartwright Memorial Chapel of Groveton Funeral Home in Groveton, Texas, with Pastor Matt Sherrock officiating. Interment will follow in Glendale Cemetery.
Visitation for Mrs. Ellis will begin Monday morning at 10:00 a.m. and continue until service time at 11:00 a.m.
Pallbearers: Brett Reynolds, Keith Luce, Sean Luce, Trey Ellis, Mark Luce, and Keith Collins.
Honorary Pallbearers: Woody Luce, Chris Mitchem, Glenn Ward, and Terry Hines.
Donna will be remembered for her kindness, grace, and creativity that touched the lives of all who knew her. Her faith, gentle spirit, and love for family and community will forever remain in the hearts of those she leaves behind. She will be deeply missed, but her beautiful legacy will continue to blossom in the lives of the many she inspired.
