Graveside services for Charles "Chip" Theodore Monk, Jr, 76, of Groveton, Texas, will be held Tuesday, October 7, 2014 at 11:00 a.m. in the Pennington Cemetery with Rev. Paul Woodworth officiating. Interment will follow in Pennington Cemetery in Pennington, Texas. Mr. Monk was born on June 24, 1938 in Queens, New York to the late Charles Monk, Sr. and Geraldine Monk went to be with his Lord and Savior on Friday, October 3, 2014 in Lufkin, Texas. He is preceded in death by his parents and a sister, Robin Tosi.

"Chip" was what people called a "Lifer". He joined into the military at a very young age and every time that his time was complete, he would re-enlist. When he initially joined the United States Army, he signed on as a paratrooper. He completed many jumps with his fellow troops, but on his final jump his parachute wouldn't open. He survived a 2000 ft. jump and landed at over ninety miles per hour. He spent three tours in Vietnam and was then stationed in Turkey. After his time in Turkey was complete, he was then sent to Okinawa. "Chip" spent over twenty-three years in the United States Army. He retired from the service in the year of 1979 in Fort Benjamin Harrison, Indiana. When he retired, he had achieved the rank of a Master Sargent E-8. In October of 1978, he married the love of his life, Carolyn (Kuehn) and they were together for almost thirty-six years. He was a loving husband, father, grandfather, brother and friend to many.

Those left behind to cherish his memory are his wife, Carolyn Monk of Groveton, Texas; daughter, Caron Dee Rushing of Houston; daughter, Denise Justice of Lapel, Indiana; son, Michael Peires of Reading, Pennsylvania; two grandchildren, Leah Justice of Lapel, Indiana and Jordon Justice of San Diego, California; numerous nieces, nephews and other relatives and friends.
